AVAL KL 51

FLEXIBLE, WATER-PROOF, JOINTLESS FOIL
FOR INSULATION LAYER OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL USE

USE
AVAL KL 51 is very flexible, one-component type of foil designed for sealing absorbent mineral substrates such as cellar plasters, cement-lime plasters, concrete and cement unbonded floors. It is particularly recommended for sealing surfaces that may be destroyed in contact with moisture e.g. gypsum plasters and plasterboards. AVAL KL 51 can be used to cover OSBs and zinc coated sheets after preparation of the contact layer on such surfaces using AVAL KT 16 plastering mix. It is suitable for sealing walls and rough floors in rooms with pressure-less water circulation i.e. bathrooms, shower cabins, kitchens, etc. Foil sealing is recommended in particular in wet areas of the rooms: around shower cabins, bathtubs, sinks, etc. It can be also suitable for protecting foundations, cellars, balconies and terraces from moisture. AVAL KL 51 foil together with AVAL KL 152 SEALING TAPES, AVAL KL 56, KL 57 CORNERS and AVAL KL 53, KL 54, KL 154 RINGS forms AVAL KL 51 SEALING SYSTEM. It enables to prepare elastic protection of the whole surfaces as well as room corners, edges of wall and rough floor joints, passages of system pipes, and expansion joints. Adhesives for ceramic tiles can be used on AVAL KL 51 foil e.g. AVAL KM 11 adhesive, AVAL KM 17, AVAL KM 15, AVAL KM 19 and AVAL KM 24 ADHESIVE FOR GRES TILES. AVAL KL 51 can be used on rough floors in wall and floor heating systems. It is suitable for internal and external use.
PROPERTIES
AVAL KL 51 foil is ready-to-use mass based on polymer dispersion, fillers and modifying agents. It is easy to use and is characterised by very good adhesion. It enables to obtain continuous and elastic watertight insulation. It is frost-resistant and water-proof.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The substrate under AVAL KL 51 should be even and structurally sound i.e. strong, stable and free from dust, dirt, salt efflorescence, loose or flaking elements, remains of old paint, oil and other substances that can impede foil adhesion. Scratches and holes in the substrate should be widened mechanically and filled with cement mortar e.g. AVAL KN 83. Grind and de-dust dusty and gypsum substrates. If necessary, use AVAL KT 17 priming emulsion to reduce substrate’s excessive absorption. To improve foil adhesion to very smooth substrates of low absorbability, cover them with AVAL KT 16 priming mix. AVAL KL 51 foil can be applied over completely dried surfaces, which should be confirmed by the following “foil test.” Spread ca. 1 m2 piece of plastic foil on the substrate. After several minutes, look at the foil surface. If there is condensed water vapour, the substrate is not ready for AVAL KL 51. AVAL KL 51 is not suitable for application over fibre-plasterboards. Freshly made surfaces e.g. plaster or subfloors can be sealed after at least 14 days since they have been completed.
PRODUCT PREPARATION
AVAL KL 51 is ready-to-use homogenous paste. It may not be combined with other materials, diluted or thickened. Immediately before application, stir it in order to achieve homogenous consistency (a slow-speed drill is recommended).
APPLICATION
Place AVAL KL 51 foil on the substrate in at least two layers. The first layer should always be applied with a paintbrush, beginning from places in which AVAL KL 152 (KL 152-10) SEALING TAPES, AVAL KL 56, KL 57 CORNERS AND AVAL KL 53, KL 54 and KL 154 RINGS will also be used. Put the accessories in the freshly applied AVAL KL 51. The second layer can be applied when the first one dries completely (after ca. 3 hours). Apply successive layers using a paintbrush or a float made of steel. Cover the resulting layer (after ca. 24 hours) with subfloor, plaster or facing. Protect sealed surfaces from the influence of water (for ca. 3 days).
The information comprises basic instructions of product application and does not relieve users of responsibility for work in accordance with good construction practice and OHS regulations.
CONSUMPTION
Total layer thickness should be selected appropriate to the conditions of water effect on the sealed surface.
Layer thicknessCoverage
1.5 mm ca. 1.5 kg/m²
2.0 mm ca. 2.0 kg/m²
3.0 mm ca. 3.0 kg/m²
TOOLS
Drill with a mixer, trowel or float made of steel, wide paintbrush, paintbrush. Wash the tools with clean water directly after use. Clean the remainder of the set mortar that is difficult to remove with AVAL KL 65 CLEANING AGENT.
PACKAGING
Plastic buckets: 5 kg, 25 kg
Pallet: 225 kg in 5 kg buckets, 400 kg in 25 kg buckets.
STORAGE & TRANSPORT
Store and transport in tightly closed buckets in dry conditions, ensuring positive temperature (pallets are particularly recommended). Avoid overheating and moisture. Shelf life is 12 months from the production date on the packaging.
