ADHESIVE OF INCREASED FLEXIBILITY AND ADHESION, FOR TILE FIXING
FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL USE, IN PARTICULAR ON TERRACES AND UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS
| AVAL KM 17 is a cement adhesive designed for fixing wall and floor ceramic tiles (glazed tiles, terracotta, clinker, gres tiles, china mosaic), cement and terrazzo tiles, and non-absorbent natural stone and stone agglomerate tiles. Apply AVAL KM 17 adhesive on balconies, terraces, façades and on wall or floor heating systems. AVAL KM 17 can be used on the following substrates: cement plaster, cement-lime plaster, gypsum plaster, concrete, aerated concrete, cement or anhydrite jointless floor, and rough surfaces made of bricks, blocks, hollow bricks and other similar ceramic or lime-sand materials. Due to its increased elasticity and adhesion, AVAL KM 17 adhesive is suitable for placing ceramic tiles on old glazed tiles and terracotta, the remainder of strong adhesives and cement mortars, terrazzo, plasterboards, asphalt, and rigid and stable water-resistant plywood. Before fixing tiles on OSB, cover the surface with AVAL KT 16 priming substance. In case of other wood-based substrates, it is recommended to apply AVAL KU 26 adhesive. Use AVAL KM 17 adhesive to fix natural stone tiles of increased absorbability (e.g. marble). It is suitable for indoor and outdoor use with maximum thickness of the layer of 2÷5 mm. |
 |
| AVAL KM 17 is a special adhesive produced as a ready-to-use dry mix of top-quality cement binder, aggregates and specially selected modifying agents. It has increased flexibility and bonding that ensure its resistance to deformations occurring during the period of use in the layer arrangement: substrate - adhesive – tile (e.g. on façades, terraces, and wall and floor heating systems). Owing to its operating parameters, it is very efficient, convenient and easy to use. Optimum selection of consistency and thickness of adhesive layer in accordance with recommendations (for relevant conditions of mortar application) eliminate slip of newly adhered tiles. AVAL KM 17 is frost-resistant and water-proof. |
 |
| The substrate should be dry, even and structurally sound i.e. strong enough; it should be free from anything that may weaken mortar adhesion, in particular dust, dirt, lime, oil, grease, wax, remains of emulsion and oil paint. It is recommended that any irregularities of substrate`s surface that prevent from the application of the appropriate layer thickness (2÷5 mm) of AVAL KM 17 should be adjusted with AVAL KM 41 levelling mortar, AVAL KT 111 plastering mix, AVAL KN 83 mortar, etc. If necessary, use AVAL KT 17 priming emulsion to reduce substrate`s excessive absorption. In case of applying the adhesive to unstable substrates of bearing capacity that can hardly be determined (e.g. dusty, difficult to clean), it is recommended to make an adhesion test, i.e. fix a tile and check the bonding after 48 hours. |
 |
| In order to prepare the adhesive, pour dry adhesive into a container with suitable amount of water (in proportion: 0.20÷0.23 l of water for 1 kg of dry mortar) and mix until homogenous. It is best to mix it mechanically, using a drill with a mixer. The adhesive is ready to use after 5 minutes and after remixing. It maintains its properties for ca. 4 hours. |
 |
| AVAL KM 17 is applied in a thin layer for tile fixing. Apply the adhesive to the prepared, primed substrate with a trowel or a smooth float made of steel and then distribute it evenly and shape it (possibly in one direction) using a notched trowel. Do not lay the mortar over excessively large surface because it maintains its adhesive properties for 10÷30 minutes (depending on the substrate and environment). In order to check if it is still possible to fix tiles, you should make a test, i.e. press the mortar with your fingers. If the adhesive has remained on the fingers, you may fix tiles. If the fingers are clean, remove the old layer of the adhesive and apply a new one. After having spread the adhesive place the tile and press it towards the substrate. Apply so much adhesive that when a tile is pressed down, its contact surface with the adhesive is even and as large as possible (min. 2/3 of tile surface). In case of tile fixing on floors located outdoors, it is recommended to ensure complete adhesion surface. To do that, apply the adhesive both on the substrate as well as on the other side of the tile. Tile position may be adjusted within 10 minutes afterwards. If grouting is to be carried out, remove excess of the adhesive when tiles are pressed towards the surface. The floor can be accessed or grouted no earlier than 24 hours after the tiles have been fixed; the adhesive achieves its full functional strength after 3 days. The information comprises basic instructions of product application and does not relieve users of responsibility for work in accordance with good construction practice and OHS regulations. |
 |
On average 1.5 kg of the adhesive is used for 1 m2 for each 1 mm of the adhesive layer. In practice consumption depends on how smooth and even the substrate is and what type of tiles is applied.
Approximate consumption of adhesive for selected types of tiles
| Type of tile | Trowel`s notch size | Thickness of adhesive layer | Average consumption (kg/m2) |
| Small (15x15 cm) and medium (25x25 mm) mosaic of smooth or slightly profiled bottom surface | 4.0 mm | ca. 2.0÷2.5 mm | 2.1÷3.75 |
| Small tiles (up to 10x10 cm) of smooth or slightly profiled bottom surface | 4.0÷6.0 mm | ca. 2.0÷3.0 mm | 2.1÷4.5 |
| Medium tiles (25x25 cm) of slightly profiled bottom surface | 6.0÷8.0 mm | ca. 2.5÷4.0 mm | 2.65÷6.0 |
| Large tiles (30x30 cm) of medium profiled bottom surface | 8.0÷10.0 mm | ca. 3.5÷5.0 mm | 3.7÷7.5 |
